Plone Cathedral Sprint – Personal Wrap-Up

The whole last week I was at the Plone Cathedral Sprint in Cologne, which I organized together with Peter Hecker from the GfU Cyrus AG, who very generously sponsored the sprint and Armin Stroß-Radschinski, who created the sprint logo and gave us a hand where ever it was needed. Organizing the sprint was a great pleasure, because the support from our sponsor and his employees was outstanding. Special thanks to Sascha, who operated the shuttle service and carried the sprinter from the hotel to the sprint location and back to the hotel in the evening.

The sprint was very productive. You can see what we achieved in the screencasts, Eric Steele, the Plone 4 release manager, made during the sprint. To sum it up I can say that the Plone cathedral sprint was dedicated to usability. The search results page is now looking much more informative than before. To set up a collection, not an easy task in itself, is now a lot more intuitive. The reference browser widget was cleaned up. The commenting infrastructure was upgraded so that finally comments can be moderated in Plone without using an add-on. Improvements of vs.event was integrated into the standard Plone event

I worked on the german translation of Plone, which is not the sexiest thing you can do in the Plone world, but a good translation is paramount to foster usability and the widespread adoption of a content management system. So I made it my job.

During the sprint I found some minor issues with translation.

I hope that these issues can be fixed

I finished the translation for the Plone domain and for some of the packages which were created during the sprint as plone.app.discussion and plone.app.event. I also completely translated the standard frontpage of Plone, which is generated, when you add a new site to your instance. For years the german frontpage was very short and contained nearly no information. The original english page pointed new users to the documentation area of plone.org, to mailinglists and to other useful ressources. I now added these links to the german translation and completed it with links to german ressources such as the Plone Entwicklerhandbuch, the Plone Benutzerhandbuch and the german Zope Mailinglist.

I really enjoyed the week, it was very productive and we had a lot of fun. The support we got from our sponsor the GfU Cyrus AG was outstanding. It was not the first time they sponsored a Zope sprint. They hosted the Grok Neanderthal sprint I and II and the World Plone Day in 2008. They do a lot to spread Plone In Germany with their Plone training program
